Valero Refining - Texas

This Texas refinery was executing a project to add a low sulfur hydrotreater unit to their process. This project included the erection of a main reactor along with several other smaller vessels. Because of the congestion in the plant and access near the unit site the crane required to perform the lifts was in excess of an 800t class machine.

When the site contractor contacted Barnhart to provide such a heavy lift crane, Barnhart suggested that a more economical method may be available – The Modular Lift Tower (MLT). The MLT was erected using one of Barnhart’s 500t hydraulic cranes which also would serve as the reactor tail crane. The MLT was erected around the existing structures in a configuration that did not interfere with any of the plant equipment.

Once the new reactor arrived via rail, it was unloaded and transported to the “hook” of the MLT and easily lifted into position. The 500t crane was then used to set the balance of the major equipment.

The containerized Modular Lift Tower is a system designed, fabricated and tested by Barnhart and can be configured in almost endless arrangements to meet the needs of a particular project.
